Building Food Independence

Farm from a Box provides infrastructural support to stabilize and localize our production. By combining climate-smart technologies with independent solar power, our system works to reduce import reliance and build livelihoods.

Our off-grid infrastructure makes profit-focused commercial farming more sustainable and resilient, strengthening local sourcing and supply. By doing that, we help build opportunities for employment, enhance access to technological know-how, empower women and youth to take leadership positions, and help economically strengthen communities.

Social Impact

Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond working towards the lowest environmental impact. We believe opportunity and equity are critical aspects of sustainability, too. Keeping our core focus on communities ensures we don't lose sight of our 'togetherness' and creates opportunities for bottom-up and localized food system transformations.

  • Increased Access to Nutritious Food

More than 9% of people worldwide are severely food insecure, and over 8.9% of the world’s population has a daily caloric intake below minimum energy requirements.

Our flexible system can be configured to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, staple crops, and plant-based proteins, supporting a diverse diet of healthy, culturally-significant foods.

  • Equal Access for Women and Girls

Uplifting women globally may be the single most effective solution towards building a climate resilient future across all dimensions of life.

Farm from a Box helps strengthen reliable high-quality production and works to close the yield gap. But on a broader level, it's an enabling mechanism for helping women farmers rise: nutritionally, economically, as trainers, as entrepreneurs, and in leadership positions.

  • Growing Beyond Subsistence Farming

With the infrastructural support to grow in any soil type, extend the growing season, and reduce post-harvest losses, producers can expand beyond subsistence farming and develop profitable agribusinesses.

With reduced operating costs and improved yields of quality produce with high market value, farmers net profitability increases and they earn reliable incomes.

  • Access to Resilient Infrastructure

Our modular cleantech powered infrastructure helps rural communities gain access to resource- efficient technologies that can increase reliable food production.

Because each unit is equipped with renewable power, cold storage, water pumping, and WiFi connectivity, it helps under developed areas with the resilient infrastructure they need to fully participate as market growers.

Regionalized Production

We're proud to say that each Farm from a Box unit is fabricated in the country where it will be deployed. We are big believers in sourcing products locally, creating jobs, and investing in all aspects of communities.

We regionalize the manufacturing and assembly of our Boxes through a network of Farm from a Box production hubs throughout the world. This supports local economies, provides good jobs in infrastructure and technology, and meets the needs of a global market while limiting costly and wasteful shipping.

Environmental Impact

Conventional farming has historically used high rates of fossil fuels, fertilizers, pesticides, and water, releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases, degrading soil health, and harming ecosystems. Farm from a Box’s off-grid modular system reduces agriculture’s footprint while providing farmers with the infrastructure needed to improve crop production, reduce losses, boost profits, and save on energy costs.

Our system provides independent solar power, water-efficient drip irrigation, in-field cold storage, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a data platform that can optimize efficiencies and provide remote support.

  • Water-Conserving Drip Irrigation

More efficient than sprinkler or flood irrigation, drip allows farmers to irrigate more land using the same amount of water, helping them conserve water in drought conditions and continue production in the face of water use restrictions.

Drip also reduces topsoil erosion and agricultural runoff, protecting nearby waterways and ecosystems.

  • Grid-Independent Solar Power

Our food system has long been reliant on fossil fuels, which release billions of tons of carbon dioxide - the biggest driver of climate change. Global surges in oil and gas prices can heavily impact farmers and make operating costs unaffordable.

100% solar-powered, just one standalone 40-foot Box saves the equivalent of 30.5 metric tons of CO2 annually - the same amount of carbon emitted by burning 33,771 pounds of coal.

When compared to gas and electric, our off-grid infrastructure provides 85% off total energy costs and significant savings for ongoing power needs.

  • Minimized Post-Harvest Losses

Less than 10% of all perishable food is currently

being refrigerated, resulting in a 30% loss of the

    world's food after harvest.

Our accessible in-field cold storage storage supports proper post-harvest handling and prevents costly losses. Cold storage slows ripening and respiration, preserving produce quality, extending the shelf life, providing communities with high quality food, and boosting farmers' profits.

  • Regenerated Soil Health

Farm from a Box works to support and enhace regenerative farming practices. When our system is used alongside methods like cover cropping, low-till soil management, and crop rotation, we sequester an average of 2 tons of carbon per acre annually.

Sequestering carbon is a necessary step to stabilize climate change. It also improves soil's physical structure, which in turn increases its drainage capabilities and its resilience to droughts, heavy rainfall, and flooding.

Regenerate Soils

Instead of clearing more land to keep up with production demands, Farm from a Box can work alongside regenerative farming practices to sequester carbon and regenerate the soils we've degraded.

Carbon-rich soils on regenerative farms naturally provide more essential nutrients to crops. This lessens the need for heavy synthetic fertilizer applications - reducing agricultural runoff, protecting waterways, and lowering operating costs.
